If you’ve got the counter space for one, we highly recommend opting for a toaster oven-style air fryer, because they offer the most versatility. These magical multi-cookers can do everything: crisp frozen french fries, roast meats and poultry, not to mention take the place of your toaster. Think of them as mini convection ovens, capable of doing everything your full sized oven can do and more.
Breville Smart Oven Air Fryer Pro
The simpler version of this Breville model, the Breville Smart Oven Air Fryer, is the very toaster oven that turned BA contributor Alex Beggs into an “air fryer person.” It’s an air fryer toaster oven combo with a large enough capacity to fit six slices of toast or bake a whole loaf of bread, no problem. It’s got a whopping 11 cooking functions (including toast, broil, bake, roast, reheat, slow cook, and air fry), and uses smart technology to control things like temperature, convection, and cooking times, so your food comes out perfect every time. That model isn’t on sale at the moment (though we’ll be checking back and are hopeful it might be later), but don’t worry: The big, souped-up version is currently discounted on Amazon.
Say hello to the Breville Smart Oven Air Fryer Pro, a real multi-cooker that can fit an entire 14-pound turkey, 5-quart Dutch oven, or a 9×13″ pan. It also comes with additional presets, like proof and dehydrate. To put it simply, this kitchen appliance is ready to transform your home cooking game.
It doesn’t get more 2023 than roasting a chicken in your countertop air fryer. The Instant Pot Vortex Pro has a 5.7-quart capacity and a built-in rotisserie spike, which produces a crisp, juicy, evenly cooked bird. In true Instant Pot fashion, the Vortex Pro also guides you through a slew of other functions for hands-off cooking: The presets will give you ideal timing and temperature settings for wings, potato wedges, and even cinnamon rolls. Plus, the drawer and tray slide out easily and are dishwasher-safe, which is more than we can say for the bottoms of our ovens. Philips Premium Airfryer XXL
At nearly 50% off, the Philips Premium Airfryer XXL is arguably the best Amazon Prime Day air fryer deal we’ve seen thus far. Deputy food editor Hana Asbrink uses hers to help frozen foods like french fries and egg rolls achieve maximum crispy status, but she’ll also bust it out for proteins like fish, pork belly, and even a whole chicken (when we say XXL, we mean XXL—it’s big enough to feed a whole family, one of the only basket style air fryers that can). “The clear win for me is the lack of preheat time,” says Asbrink, which makes it more efficient both from an energy and time perspective. With a 7-quart capacity, the Philips is not tiny; its footprint is 15.5″ x 15.5″. But it’s an excellent choice if you have the counter or cabinet space.
If you’re in the market for something on the more affordable side, consider the Cosori Pro II. This basket-style air fryer is our best budget pick for a number of reasons. It has a sleek digital touchscreen and a 5.8-quart capacity, leaving it, while not as big as the Philips, still one of the bigger basket air fryers on the market. (Bigger is better for air fryers, since you want plenty of room for air circulation; this allows your food to get crispy). Associate food editor Rachel Gurjar used her Cosori air fryer to test these sesame-coconut chicken tenders and, I mean, just look at them.
The Ninja Max XL is another fave among BA staffers, who find it to be easier to clean than the comparably sized Cosori. They say the greatest thing about this air fryer is its “Max Crisp” function, a sort of air-frying Turbo Mode that makes things like chicken wings and veggies wildly crispy—and very quickly. With a 5.5-quart capacity and a round basket, it isn’t quite as XL as some others, but it still holds up to three pounds of french fries. It’s the perfect gadget for cooking a weeknight dinner for two.
This Dash air fryer has a lot going for her besides the retro aesthetic. With a 6-quart capacity, this is the biggest basket-style air fryer on the list, save for the Philips Premium XXL. It comes with a removable non-stick drawer for easy cleaning and an auto shut-off feature for safety. The black one’s on sale right now, but it also comes in white, red, and aqua, if that’s your thing.
This Ninja model is as easy to clean as the Max XL, but it’s much better suited to small kitchens at just 8.5″ x 12.1″ wide and 11″ tall. Still, even at that fairly compact size, the Ninja holds 2 pounds of french fries. While air fryers’ crisping capabilities get all the credit, it’s the dehydrate setting that BA contributor Lauren Joseph loves most on this machine. The Ninja can heat to just 105 degrees Fahrenheit (for reference, your oven likely starts at 170), which makes for ideal fruit and vegetable chips, granola, or crackers. Snag this one, and you won’t be disappointed.
Maybe you have a teeny kitchen, and even a standard basket-style air fryer would take up too much space. If this resonates with you, consider the super compact Cosori Mini, which has a 2-quart capacity and holds one or two small servings (it can just barely fit two burger patties). Our friends at Epicurious consider it to be the best mini air fryer on the market, and trust it to dependably churn out perfectly crisp sweet potato fries and tater tots and beautifully browned veggies. They appreciate its easy-to-use digital interface, which has four settings that can be custom-programmed. Like the Dash air fryer, this one also comes in a variety of colors.
